NEW: Transcripts and Recordings of Conference Panels and Sessions Now Available

If you were unable to participate in the meeting, this is an opportunity to sample sessions. If you attended the meeting but missed a session or two, you may find additional information.

This year's conference featured roundtable discussions and a poster session, two new, member-driven components. At our roundtable discussions, students and scholars, teachers and friends came together to discuss 38 topics ranging from "...Media Images of the East and West" to "Ecological Terrorism." Some roundtable discussions ended at the sound of the closing bell. Others continued throughout the coffee break and into the next day. A few are still going on through e-mail.

The poster session was also a hit with members. It featured 24 posters on topics as diverse as ecology, journalism, education, and community building. Presenters told us they appreciated the opportunity to highlight their research and current work. Other conference goers said they enjoyed the chance to learn about a variety of topics and network with other Fulbrighters in a relaxed, minimally-structured atmosphere.

The Fulbright Association will schedule member-driven activities such as the roundtable discussions and poster sessions at future conferences!

We will soon issue a call for ideas for the conference theme and panel topics for the 31st Annual Conference to be held in fall 2008 in Beijing! More details will follow. Important Conference Registration Information

As our 30th Anniversary Conference is fast approaching, we wanted to remind those of you planning to attend of a few important things:

1) If you have registered for the conference, you should have received a confirmation e-mail last week. Please read it carefully and send any necessary changes on to the Fulbright Association at fulbright@fulbright.org or call (202) 347-5543 by Thursday, Oct. 25.

2) If you have registered but have not received a confirmation e-mail yet, please contact the Association immediately at fulbright@fulbright.org or (202) 347-5543.

3) If you have not yet registered for the conference and plan to, please do so TODAY. Today is the last day you can register for the conference and be assured that you will be listed in the participants list and have access to the events you want to attend. You can register on-line at http://www.fulbright.org/conference/2007/reg1.htm.

4) If you have registered for the conference but have not yet paid your registration fee nor made prior arrangements with the Fulbright Association to pay on site, including verification of your on-site method of payment, please do so NOW. Failure to do so may prevent you from participating in conference functions and being listed in the participants list. You can pay online now at http://www.fulbright.org/conference/2007/reg2.htm.

5) If you were planning to stay at The Madison but have not yet made your reservations, please do so ASAP. Please visit the conference hotel page at http://www.fulbright.org/conference/2007/hotel.htm for contact information and reservation instructions. The Madison may no longer accept reservations at the Fulbright Association room rate for all days as it is nearly sold out. If you are unable to secure a room at the Fulbright Association room rate, please contact the Fulbright Association office and we will try to assist you. However, at this late date we cannot guarantee you a room at the conference rate.

6) The Fulbright Association can no longer take new requests for roommates as the hotel is nearly sold out.

2007 Selma Jeanne Cohen Lecturer Announced

The Fulbright Association announced today that Ron Jenkins (Indonesia 2007), professor of theater at Wesleyan University, will present the 2007 Selma Jeanne Cohen Lecture in International Dance Scholarship on Saturday, Nov. 3, at The Madison Hotel in Washington, D.C. Dr. Jenkins will speak on "Sacred Dance and Secular Law in Bali."

Don't forget that the Fulbright Association is continuing to take registrations for our 30th Anniversary Conference: People & the Planet! The member registration rate is now $295. Currently enrolled students may register at the student rate of $130. Non-member alumni are invited to register at the non-member rate of $355. Daily registration rates for Friday, Saturday, and Sunday are also available.

REMINDER: Submit Your Poster Session Proposals!

This is a quick reminder that the Fulbright Association continues to accept proposals for the poster session being held on Sunday, Nov. 4, at the Fulbright Association 30th Anniversary Conference: People & The Planet.

So far, we've received some great proposals in fields as diverse as environmental science, marine biology, cultural anthropology, education, dance, art, and journalism.

Curious about the possibility of presenting a poster, but unsure of what, exactly, you're supposed to do? Fulbright Association 30th Anniversary Conference: People & the Planet

Come to Washington, D.C., November 1 through 4 to experience the Fulbright Association’s 30th Anniversary Conference—an international, multidisciplinary, intergenerational meeting that incorporates a wealth of ideas from members, visiting Fulbrighters, and representatives of sister Fulbright alumni organizations abroad. The conference will provide participants with ideas and information on important issues and will facilitate professional and social networking. In addition to plenary sessions, roundtable discussions, a poster session, and task force meetings will enable alumni and visiting Fulbrighters to engage with each other and to share information on their current work. The theme “People & the Planet” results from a careful review of comments submitted by 335 Fulbright Association members, visiting Fulbrighters, and representatives from sister Fulbright alumni organizations abroad. It is adapted from a post by Bhekie S. Gule, a visiting Fulbrighter from Swaziland who is studying at Duquesne University in Pittsburgh. We would also like to acknowledge the contributions of Luis Fernando Aldana, a visiting Fulbrighter from Guatemala studying at Iowa State University. He took a discussion on data mining from his data base class and developed a spread sheet of blog topics that became the basis for tracking suggestions received.
Climate change, environmental challenges, and conservation were the subject of 122 posts and emails. Development was a close second at 105. These results helped us decide on the theme “People & the Planet.” Other significant clusters concerned globalization, cultural communication and understanding, terrorism, conflict, education, peace, the Fulbright Program, health, migration, international affairs, the media and communications, religion, and technology.

The rich variety of ideas prompted us to implement suggestions on conference session formats by artist Marsha Conn (Mexico 1999); by Steven Lund (Slovakia 2003), professor of English as a second language, Arizona Western College; and by Merryl Kravitz (Lithuania 2001), professor of secondary education, New Mexico Highlands University. To enable discussion of more topics and to promote interaction among participants, we have scheduled the session for facilitated roundtable discussions and the poster session.

Call for Proposals for 2007 Selma Jeanne Cohen Fund Lecture on Dance

WASHINGTON, D.C. (June 4, 2007) -- The Fulbright Association has issued a call for applications to present the 2007 lecture under the Selma Jeanne Cohen Fund for International Scholarship on Dance. Applications must be received by July 31, 2007.

The Selma Jeanne Cohen Fund enables a dance scholar to present a major paper at the Fulbright Association's annual conference. The 2007 lecture will be delivered on Nov. 3 as part of the Fulbright Association 30th Anniversary Conference: People and the Planet, in Washington, D.C. The recipient of the Selma Jeanne Cohen Fund award will receive round-trip travel and associated expenses.

The 2007 lecturer will be chosen according to guidelines that were developed with the late Dr. Selma Jeanne Cohen, dance historian and founding editor of the International Encyclopedia of Dance. The competition is open to all dance scholars. Proposal guidelines are posted at www.fulbright.org/cohenfund.

Barbara Browning, associate professor of performance studies at New York University and Fulbright alumna to Brazil, presented the 2006 Selma Jeanne Cohen Lecture entitled "Where My Dancing Had Saved Me from Disgrace."

Previous lecturers are: Richard Semmens, associate professor of music at the University of Western Ontario, Canada; dance historian and choreographer Millicent Hodson of Ballets Old & New in London; Wayne B. Kraft, professor of German at Eastern Washington University and director of the Erdely Ensemble; Gretchen Ward Warren, professor in the School of Theater and Dance at the University of South Florida; Robin Marshall Grove, senior lecturer in the Department of English with Cultural Studies of the University of Melbourne, Australia; and Leslie Friedman, artistic director of The Lively Foundation in San Francisco. By the April 30 deadline, the Association had received more than 300 comments from Fulbright Association members, visiting Fulbrighters now in the United States, sister Fulbright alumni organizations throughout the world, and other members of the global Fulbright network. All of the ideas and discussions are now being analyzed for common themes and will guide development of the 30th Anniversary Conference program. The Fulbright Association’s 30th Anniversary Conference will be held from Nov. 1 through Nov. 4, 2007, at The Madison Hotel in Washington, D.C. We hope you can join us as we celebrate this milestone in our organization's history! Now, I invite you to help determine the conference theme and panel topics by sharing your thoughts on the three most important global issues we face today. To respond, please post your thoughts as comments to this blog entry (see "Leave a comment" at the bottom of this post) or send to me an email or letter at the address below. Please respond by April 30 so we can compile your suggestions and develop programming.

Our Association—and our sister Fulbright alumni organizations abroad—may have the most interesting membership bases of any organizations in the world. Currently, the Fulbright Program operates between the United States and more than 155 countries worldwide. That means that alumni represent varied international backgrounds, experiences, and perspectives, as well as many disciplines. Fulbright grants go to individuals in a diverse range of fields, including agriculture, business, creative writing, dance, geology, journalism, medicine, teaching, urban planning, and women's studies, just to mention a few!

Each year approximately 6,000 new Fulbright grants are awarded to both U.S. citizens and to students, teachers, and scholars from abroad who come to communities throughout the United States to study, research, and teach. Since the first Fulbrighter went to China in 1948, more than 275,000 Fulbright grants have been awarded in order to increase mutual understanding between the people of the United States and the people of other countries. Senator J. William Fulbright hoped that Fulbright exchanges would bring "a little more knowledge, a little more reason, and a little more compassion into world affairs and thereby to increase the chance that nations will learn at last to live in peace and friendship."

What an amazingly broad and deep reservoir of talent the pool of Fulbright alumni represents!
